Another successful youth ENTREPREUNER

Cherish Parrish is an enrolled member of the Match-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Potawatomi and descendent of the Grand Traverse Band of Odawa and Ojibwe.  Cherish is 16 years old and a 10th grader at Allegan High School.  Cherish participates in extra curricular activities including basketball, volleyball, and track.  Outside of sports and school, Cherish spends a lot of time working with black ash; she is a sixth generation black ash basket maker.  Cherish “thinks it is very important to carry on the art of black ash basketry and teach it to our future Native youth.”  In 2004 Cherish was honored with the South West American Indian Association Youth Fellowship Award for her beautiful black ash baskets.  She has participated in ARTrain USA and sells her baskets to galleries and museums across Michigan and at art shows nationally.

Cherish is now using her basket weaving skills and experience to embark on a new business venture.  With the assistance of the National FSA American Indian Credit Outreach Initiative Program and her mother, Kelly Church a renowned Native artist, Cherish has created Native Arts by Nebeshanze.  This small business offers specialized art classes and hand made art sales in a gallery setting.  Merchandise at Native Arts by Nebeshanze includes a selection of:  black ash baskets and bracelets, dream catchers, gift cards, and pottery and fine art on consignment.  Cherish will also be offering black ash basket and dream catcher “make and take” classes.  The Native Arts by Nebeshanze gallery is located at 209 Riverfront Plaza in Allegan, Michigan.  Persons interested in checking out gallery hours or class schedules can contact Native Arts by Nebeshanze by phone at (269) 686-0602 or by e-mail at artcove@hotmail.com.

The National FSA American Indian Credit Outreach Initiative Program has been honored to work with Cherish Parrish, a talented and ambitious young lady.  We would like to wish Cherish Parrish and Native Arts by Nebeshanze the best of luck and success.
